Where Zoho Books is the better choice
If you're under the caps and want a slick cloud experience, Zoho's free plan is arguably the most generous hosted free tier on the market: automatic bank feeds, a customer portal, mileage tracking, and mobile apps — things a local-first desktop app either does manually or doesn't do. If your business lives inside the wider Zoho suite (CRM, Mail, Inventory), staying in that ecosystem makes sense too.
Where SlowBooks Pro is the better choice
The caps are the catch. 1,000 invoices a year is under 20 a week — a busy trade or small shop crosses that. And the $50K revenue ceiling means the free plan is, by design, a temporary on-ramp to paid plans. SlowBooks Pro has no on-ramp because there's nothing to ramp onto: payroll, inventory, analytics, and unlimited everything are simply included.
There's also the ownership question. Zoho hosts your books; export is on their terms. SlowBooks Pro keeps each company as a single file on your own disk — back it up like any other file, and the software runs forever whether or not the project (or the internet) is reachable.
The bottom line
Zoho Books Free is an excellent trial-sized cloud ledger for micro-businesses that expect to graduate to a subscription. SlowBooks Pro is a permanent home for your books — full-featured, uncapped, and local — for anyone who'd rather own their accounting than rent it.
